The J. David Gladstone Institute, a biomedical research facility, was designed and built as a joint effort between the University of San Francisco and the Gladstone Institutes. It is the first privately funded research facility for the University, and was designed to provide flexibility to the research community.

One notable design feature is the layout of the floors – the research areas are left open to foster interaction between scientists, and to allow them to be easily reconfigured as research needs change.
